1. First open a new document, you can make it any size you
want, for this tutorial make the width 230 pixles and the height 700 pixles.
2. Choose the color picker and set the foreground color to a0803b by typing it into the hex value input, then hit ok.
Hold Alt and hit delete to apply the
colour to the background layer.
3. Go to the filter menu and choose noise/ add noise, Set the amount to 60% and make sure Gaussian is dotted and
monochromatic is checked, hit Ok.
4. Go to filter again, then blur/motion blur, set the angle
to 90 degrees and set the distance 40 pixels, hit Ok.

5. Go over to the layers pallet and
make a new layer, reset
the foreground
and background colors to default by
pressing d and x.
6. Next go to filter/render and select clouds, if necessary
apply the clouds filter again to the layer, you need a good balance of dark
areas.
 7. Go to the layers pallet, and in the blending modes menu
select vivid light, and that will blend it into the wood
(shown on the right)

8. Also on the layers pallet turn the opacity down to about 30- 40 depending on how the clouds filter was applied.
9. Next we need to merge the layers,
there’s a number of
ways to do this, one
of which is to go to layers menu and select
flatten image.
You should now have only
1 layer in the layers pallet.
10. Now we need to stretch the image to blend the edges, as you
can see the horizontal edges of the image are a little sharp. Zoom out to make
sure u can see the whole image, go to the layers pallet and double click on the
backgrounds layer to unlock it, you should get a window pop up, change the name
to wood and hit Ok. This is so the layer is editable.
11. Next go to Edit menu /free transform, you should now be
able to stretch the image by pulling up on the pointers. Stretch the top and
the bottom of the image to the point where the sharp edges are no longer seen. .
Hit enter when finished.
12. Getting the
right wood texture can be tricky, one way to get a nice wood effect is to
resize the image. Go to the image menu/ image size and change the height from 700px to 800px and hit ok. This should give a better wood effect. Make sure the ‘constrain proportions’ is unchecked, so the
width stays the same.
13 . Next step is to make the knots in the wood, having the
knots makes the wood look more real. Select the elliptical marquee tool, were
going to make one knot in this wood, make an egg shape selection near the top
of the image. Then go to the select menu and choose feather, feather the
selection about 12 pixels and hit Ok.

13. Next go to the filter menu, distort/wave, match the settings shown in the image,
You can see a preview of the knot
effect, if you don’t like the chosen settings u can hit randomize to give you random
settings, when your happy with the effect hit Ok.
You can repeat the process if you want another knot in the
wood.
14. Go to select menu then choose deselect, then go to the filter menu distort/twirl, to give the
wood more of a natural look. Hit Ok
This is the final outcome (image has been scaled down 348 by 100)
